Overview

This Privacy Policy explains how Indie Member collects, uses, shares, and protects personal information when you visit indiemember.com, create an account, join a membership hosted through Indie Member, or otherwise use the service.

Indie Member plays two roles. We are the company providing the Indie Member platform to creators and businesses, and we are the software provider that powers each creator’s own membership site on an Indie Member subdomain or connected custom domain.

If you join a creator’s membership site powered by Indie Member, that creator may separately control parts of your information and may have their own privacy terms. This policy covers Indie Member’s own practices, including the infrastructure and software we provide.

Information We Collect

We collect information you provide directly, such as your name, email address, billing information, account details, membership plan details, support messages, branding settings, and other content or data you submit through the service.

We also collect technical and usage information, such as IP address, browser type, device information, approximate location derived from IP, referring pages, timestamps, authentication events, error logs, and activity needed to operate, secure, and improve the service.

If you use a creator-hosted membership site powered by Indie Member, we may process member profile information, membership status, purchase details, renewal and cancellation status, and related account-access data on behalf of that creator.

  • Account and profile information, including email-based sign-in records.
  • Subscription and billing data for Indie Member platform subscriptions.
  • Membership and transaction records related to creator-run memberships.
  • Files, plan descriptions, branding settings, and other business data you upload or configure.
  • Security, fraud-prevention, device, and diagnostic logs.

How We Use Information

We use personal information to provide and operate the service, create and manage accounts, authenticate users and members, process payments, send transactional emails, maintain security, respond to support requests, enforce our terms, comply with law, and improve the platform.

We may also use information to troubleshoot bugs, monitor uptime and abuse, personalize basic account experiences, and communicate important service, billing, or policy updates.

  • Provide login, hosting, membership gating, and account management features.
  • Process Indie Member subscription billing and creator-member billing workflows.
  • Send sign-in links, receipts, onboarding emails, service alerts, and support responses.
  • Detect fraud, abuse, unauthorized access, and violations of our terms.
  • Analyze reliability, performance, and product usage trends.

Legal Bases and Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, our legal bases for processing may include performing our contract with you, pursuing legitimate interests such as security and service improvement, complying with legal obligations, and acting with your consent where consent is required.

Depending on applicable law, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or portability of your personal information, or to object to or limit certain processing. You may also have the right to appeal a denied privacy request where local law provides that right.

Indie Member does not sell personal information and does not use personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

How We Share Information

We share personal information only as reasonably necessary to run the service, complete transactions, comply with law, protect rights and safety, or in connection with a business transfer such as a merger, acquisition, financing, or asset sale.

When you interact with a creator’s membership site, information may be shared with that creator because they are operating the membership business, setting access rules, and managing their relationship with members.

  • With service providers that help us host, authenticate, email, store data, and process payments.
  • With creators or account owners when you sign up for, buy, or use their memberships.
  • With professional advisers, auditors, insurers, or law enforcement when reasonably necessary.
  • As part of a corporate transaction, reorganization, or sale of all or part of our business.

Key Service Providers

Our service uses third-party infrastructure. Those providers may process personal information according to their own roles and agreements with us or with creators using the platform.

  • Google Firebase for authentication, database, and storage infrastructure.
  • Stripe for platform subscription billing and creator-member payment flows.
  • Amazon SES for transactional email delivery.
  • Vercel for hosting, deployment, routing, and domain infrastructure.

Creator-Hosted Membership Sites

Creators using Indie Member can offer free or paid memberships on an Indie Member subdomain or a connected custom domain. If you join or use a creator’s membership site, Indie Member may process your information to authenticate you, record membership status, manage access, support billing flows, and keep the site working.

For paid memberships, the creator’s connected Stripe account is intended to be the merchant of record for member purchases. That means payment obligations, creator content, plan terms, refunds, and member-facing promises are generally the creator’s responsibility, not Indie Member’s, except as required by law.

Community and Member-Submitted Content

Some creator sites include community features such as posts, comments, reactions, member profiles, display names, avatars, and uploaded images or files. Content you submit in those areas is generally visible to other members of that creator’s site according to the access rules the creator has configured.

We may also process basic activity signals — such as last-seen timestamps, post and comment counts, and moderation status — so the community functions properly and creators can moderate it. Creators and their designated moderators can remove, lock, hide, or restrict content and accounts on their own sites.

Sign-In and Authentication

Indie Member uses passwordless email sign-in. When you sign in, we send a one-time link to your email address. Clicking the link establishes a signed-in session.

Because your email inbox is what grants access to your account, you are responsible for keeping it secure. Anyone with access to your email can request a sign-in link.

Email Communications

We send transactional emails that are required to operate the service — sign-in links, billing receipts, security alerts, account notices, and similar messages. These cannot be turned off while you have an active account.

Creator sites may also send activity notifications and periodic digest emails about community posts, comments, and other engagement. You can opt out of those non-transactional emails using the unsubscribe link included in each message, the one-click list-unsubscribe header supported by most email clients, or your notification preferences inside the relevant member portal.

Cookies and Similar Technologies

We use a small number of cookies and similar technologies that are necessary to run the service. The primary one is a secure, HTTP-only session cookie that keeps you signed in after you click a sign-in link.

We and our providers may also use cookies or local storage for session continuity, fraud prevention, security, load balancing, remembering preferences, and basic diagnostics. Indie Member does not use third-party advertising cookies and does not offer a consumer ad-targeting product.

Data Retention

We keep personal information for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy, including providing the service, maintaining business and tax records, resolving disputes, enforcing agreements, and meeting legal obligations.

Retention periods may vary depending on the type of record, whether an account is active, whether a creator relationship is ongoing, and whether we must preserve billing, fraud, or security records.

Security

We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information. No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your email account and any devices you use to access Indie Member, because email-based sign-in links can grant access to your account.

Children

Indie Member is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 through the service.

If you believe a child has provided personal information to us in violation of this policy, contact us and we will review the matter.

International Transfers

Indie Member and its providers may process and store information in the United States and other countries where we or our service providers operate. Those countries may have data protection laws that differ from the laws where you live.

Where required, we rely on appropriate contractual, technical, or organizational safeguards for cross-border data handling.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we may update the date above and provide additional notice where appropriate.

Your continued use of the service after an updated policy becomes effective means the updated policy will apply going forward.
